Biography

Blessed Herman José Fernández Sáenz, also known as Brother Clemente Faustino, was born on 6 April 1915 in La Redonda, Logroño, Spain. He was a devoted member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a Catholic religious congregation founded by Saint John Baptist de La Salle, dedicated to the education of young people.

During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Brother Clemente Faustino faithfully upheld his duties as an educator, imparting knowledge and values to his students. He lived a life of prayer, humility, and dedication to the betterment of society, instilling the teachings of the Catholic Church in the hearts and minds of his pupils.

Tragically, on 19 September 1936, Brother Clemente Faustino became a victim of the violence that characterized the Spanish Civil War. He was martyred in Tarragona, Spain, bravely upholding his faith until the very end.

Recognizing his heroic virtues and unwavering commitment to Christ, Brother Clemente Faustino was venerated on 28 June 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI, who declared his martyrdom. This declaration acknowledged the supreme sacrifice he made for his faith.

On 13 October 2013, Pope Francis beatified Brother Clemente Faustino, officially bestowing upon him the title of Blessed. The beatification ceremony took place in Tarragona, Spain, commemorating his courageous witness to the Gospel and his ultimate sacrifice.
