Blessed Henry of Cologne, also known as Henry of Utrecht, was born in an unknown year and was raised in a pious home by his parents, who ensured his good education. As a young man, he pursued higher studies at the prestigious University of Paris, which was renowned for its intellectual and theological pursuits during the medieval period.
After completing his education, Henry was appointed as a canon of the cathedral of Utrecht in the Netherlands. Within his role as a canon, he actively participated in the liturgical life of the Church and engaged in pastoral ministry. During this time, he formed a close friendship with Blessed Jordan of Saxony, who was the successor of Saint Dominic de Guzman and the second Master General of the Dominican Order.
In the early 1220s, Henry had the opportunity to hear Saint Dominic de Guzman preach during a visit to Paris. Moved by Saint Dominic's words and inspired by the charism of the Dominican Order, Henry decided to join the order and became one of its first members in the year 1220. He embraced the Dominican way of life, characterized by a deep commitment to prayer, contemplation, and the preaching of the Gospel.
In 1221, Blessed Henry of Cologne was appointed as the first prior of the Dominican community in Cologne, Germany. As the prior, he oversaw the establishment and growth of the Dominican presence in that region, promoting the spiritual formation of the friars and the spread of the Dominican charism to the local community.
While not much is known about his specific accomplishments during his relatively short life, Henry's dedication to the Dominican Order and his commitment to the spiritual life earned him a reputation for holiness among his contemporaries.
