Biography

Blessed Henrik of Denmark, also known as Enrico di Danimarca and Henry of Perugia, was a devout Franciscan tertiary and a member of the Danish royal family. Born in Denmark, Henrik felt a profound calling to a life of holiness and dedicated himself to the service of God.

As part of his unwavering commitment to his faith, Henrik embarked on a pilgrimage to the sacred sites associated with Saint Francis of Assisi in Italy. It was during this pilgrimage that he arrived in Perugia, a city situated in the region of Umbria. Unfortunately, Henrik's health deteriorated significantly during his stay in Perugia, and he was admitted to the local Hospital of Saints Cosmas and Damian.

Despite his physical suffering and eventual passing, it became evident that Henrik had developed a reputation for exceptional wisdom and holiness during his time in Perugia. To the amazement of many, reports of miraculous healings began to circulate, as people turned to him for intercession and sought his spiritual guidance.

Legend holds that at the moment of his death on March 13, 1415, the church bells of Perugia tolled spontaneously, a sign perceived as a testament to his profound sanctity. The local population, deeply moved by his piety and the miracles attributed to him, devoted themselves to his memory and sought his intercession in times of need.

Over time, the relics of Blessed Henrik of Denmark were enshrined in an urn at an 18th-century church. Though details regarding his beatification are not provided, it is clear that his reputation as a holy man endured, prompting the restoration of his feast day in the calendar in 2007. Presently, he is venerated on March 13 in Perugia, Italy.

Blessed Henrik of Denmark remains an inspiring figure, embodying the virtues of faith, humility, and service to others. His life serves as a testament to the transformative power of devotion and the potential for holiness in all individuals, regardless of their worldly status. Today, he stands as an example to be emulated and a source of spiritual consolation for those who seek his intercession.
