Biography

Blessed Helena Goldberg, also known as Sister Maria Acutina, was born on 6 July 1882 in Dluzek, Nowy Targ, Poland. She was a devout Catholic who dedicated her life to God and serving others. At the age of 23, she joined the Sisters of Saint Elizabeth, a religious congregation known for their care for the sick, orphaned, and marginalized.

Helena's commitment to her vocation was evident as she made her perpetual profession on 25 July 1916. Throughout her life, she selflessly served in various capacities, including as an assistant to the parish priest in Nysa, Poland, where she provided spiritual guidance and support to the local community. Her compassionate nature led her to work in a hydrotherapy sanatorium in Wlen, Poland, where she cared for the physical and emotional well-being of the patients.

One of the significant chapters in Sister Maria's life was her service at an orphanage in Lubiaz, Poland. She lovingly cared for the children, nurturing them with love and kindness. This dedication to their well-being extended even during times of great danger and uncertainty.

As World War II was nearing its end, the Soviet Red Army invaded Lubiaz. Recognizing the imminent threat posed to the orphanage and the vulnerable girls under her care, Blessed Helena took courageous action. She led the girls from the orphanage to Krzydlina Wielka, Poland, seeking refuge and safety.

Unfortunately, the Red Army caught up with them in Krzydlina Wielka. Undeterred, Sister Maria tried to protect the girls from harm, standing firm in her commitment to their safety. Tragically, she was killed by the soldiers in her brave attempt to defend the children. Her selfless sacrifice and martyrdom embody the true essence of faith and love.

Blessed Helena Goldberg's feast day is celebrated on 2 May in the Catholic Church, commemorating her martyrdom. Following her death, she was buried in a tomb alongside Sister Anna Richter in Krzydlina Wielka, Wolów, Poland.

Her virtuous life and ultimate sacrifice did not go unnoticed. On 19 June 2021, Pope Francis recognized her heroic virtues, declaring her venerable. Later, on 11 June 2022, Pope Francis beatified her, which is a recognition of her martyrdom and entrance into the ranks of the Blessed in the Catholic Church.

Blessed Helena Goldberg is an inspiration to all, reminding us of the importance of living a life dedicated to God's love and serving others, even in the face of adversity. Her memory lives on as a testament to faith, courage, and unwavering devotion. May she intercede for us and inspire us to follow the path of righteousness and selflessness.
