Biography

Blessed Gumersindo Valtierra Alonso was a devout member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by St. Anthony Mary Claret. He was born on 13 January 1874 in San Martín de Humada, Burgos, Spain. From a young age, Gumersindo displayed a deep commitment to his faith and a calling to serve God.

In his early twenties, Gumersindo joined the Claretians and professed his vows on 15 August 1894 in Cervera, Spain. He dedicated his life to the service of God and the Church, embracing the charism of the Claretians, which emphasizes mission work, evangelization, and education.

After years of diligent study and spiritual formation, Gumersindo was ordained a priest in Lleida, Spain on 19 September 1908. As a priest, he exhibited great pastoral zeal and a compassionate spirit, touching the lives of many through his ministry.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, Gumersindo Valtierra Alonso fell victim to the hostility and violence that engulfed the country. He was martyred for his faith, courageously enduring persecution and ultimately being shot on 26 July 1936 in Barcelona, Spain. His unwavering commitment to Christ and his Church until the end serves as a testament to his deep faith and ardent love for God.

Blessed Gumersindo Valtierra Alonso is venerated as a martyr and recognized for his heroic witness. On 21 December 2016, Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrdom, acknowledging his selfless sacrifice. Subsequently, on 21 October 2017, Pope Francis beatified him at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato, emphasizing the importance and significance of Gumersindo's life and witness.

Today, the feast day of Blessed Gumersindo Valtierra Alonso is celebrated on 26 July, as well as on 1 February, as he is one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs who suffered persecution and death during the Spanish Civil War. As a Claretian and martyr, he continues to inspire and intercede for those who seek his help and guidance in their spiritual journey.

Blessed Gumersindo Valtierra Alonso's life serves as an example of unwavering faith, sacrificial love, and dedication to the service of God and others. His memory reminds us of the great sacrifices made by countless individuals who, like him, have given their lives for the sake of the Gospel.
