Biography

Blessed Guillermo Álvarez Quemada, also known as Brother Oseas, was born on 10 February 1890 in Sta. Cruz de la Salceda, Burgos, Spain. He was a professed religious in the Brothers of the Christian Schools, also known as the De La Salle Brothers.

Brother Oseas dedicated his life to the service of God through education. He was a committed teacher who sought to instill Christian values and impart knowledge to the students entrusted to him. Throughout his religious life, he lived out the charism of the De La Salle Brothers, who were known for their work in educating disadvantaged youth.

During the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, Brother Oseas remained steadfast in his faith and dedication to his vocation. Sadly, the war also brought about persecution of religious individuals, and Brother Oseas fell victim to this violence.

He was martyred on 30 July 1936 in Casa de Campo, Madrid, Spain, for his unwavering faith and commitment to his religious calling. His martyrdom is a testament to his courage and refusal to renounce his beliefs, even in the face of great danger.

Blessed Guillermo Álvarez Quemada was officially recognized for his martyrdom by Pope Benedict XVI, who decreed his veneration on 19 December 2011. The beatification ceremony took place on 13 October 2013, during the papacy of Pope Francis. This recognition by the Catholic Church acknowledges the selfless sacrifice made by Brother Oseas in defense of his faith.

Although no specific representation is mentioned for Blessed Guillermo Álvarez Quemada, his memory and example of faithful devotion continue to inspire and touch the lives of believers.
