Biography

Blessed Guido of Acqui, also known as Guisto, Guy, Vido, or Wido, was born around the year 1004 into a noble family. His father held the title of Count of Acquesana, which afforded Guido a privileged upbringing.

After receiving a quality education in Bologna, Italy, Guido devoted his life to the service of the Church. In March 1034, he was appointed as the Bishop of Acqui, Monteferrato, Piedmont, Italy, where he diligently served his flock for the next 36 years until his death.

Guido became known as a renowned reformer, actively working to combat corruption and bring about positive change within the Church and society. Notably, he used a substantial portion of his personal wealth to support the local economy, ensuring that the poor and needy were provided for. His acts of charity and generosity towards those less fortunate earned him great admiration and respect.

One of Guido's significant contributions was his advocacy for the education of women. Recognizing the importance of equal opportunities for all, he promoted the education and empowerment of women, understanding that their intellectual growth and development were fundamental to building a just and inclusive society.

Guido's devotion to the faith led him to found the convent of Santa Maria de Campis, providing a haven for religious women seeking a life dedicated to prayer, study, and service. Through this establishment, Guido sought to further reinforce the importance of women's spiritual and intellectual pursuits within the Church.

Blessed Guido of Acqui passed away on 2 June 1070, succumbing to natural causes after a long and fruitful life devoted to his episcopal duties and acts of charity. He was laid to rest in the cathedral of Saint Guisto in Susa, Italy, where he continues to be remembered and revered by the faithful.

Recognizing the holiness and virtuous life led by Guido, Pope Blessed Pius IX beatified him in 1853, confirming his cultus. Today, he is celebrated and honored on his feast days, which include 2 June, the 2nd Sunday in July (in Acqui Terme, Italy), and 8 July (in the diocese of Acqui, Italy).
