Biography

Blessed Gregorio Charlez Ribera, also known as Brother Prudenci de Pomar de Cinca, was a Franciscan Capuchin friar who dedicated his life to serving God and others. He was born on 17 November 1875 in Pomar de Cinca, Huesca, Spain.

Brother Prudenci entered religious life and made his solemn profession as a Capuchin friar on 6 February 1905. Throughout his years as a friar, he lived a life of humility, simplicity, and devotion. He was known for his deep spirituality and love for God, which he shared through his commitment to prayer, meditation, and the Holy Sacraments.

In addition to his religious duties, Brother Prudenci had a talent for craftsmanship. He was skilled in woodcarving and used his artistic abilities to create beautiful devotional images and religious artifacts for churches and individuals. His creations reflected his deep faith and were widely praised for their intricate details and spiritual significance.

Later in his life, Brother Prudenci began experiencing a decline in his eyesight. Despite this debilitating condition, he continued to offer his service to the community and his fellow friars. He adapted to his loss of eyesight with great patience and acceptance, considering it as a cross to carry for the sake of Christ.

However, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War brought great turmoil to the country, and Brother Prudenci's faith and dedication to his religious calling ultimately led to his martyrdom. As a result of his steadfast adherence to his beliefs and refusal to renounce his vocation, Brother Prudenci was imprisoned and later murdered by Marxists on 28 July 1936 at the edge of town in Arenys de Mar, Barcelona, Spain.

Blessed Gregorio Charlez Ribera's death was a tragic loss, but his martyrdom became a testament to his unwavering faith and commitment to his religious calling. He was recognized for his sacrifice and venerated on 5 June 2015 by Pope Francis, who declared him a martyr. Subsequently, on 21 November 2015, Pope Francis beatified him at the cathedral of Santa Creu i Santa EulÖlia in Barcelona, Spain, in a ceremony presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.

Blessed Gregorio Charlez Ribera serves as an inspiring example of courage, perseverance, and unwavering faith in the face of persecution. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire Catholics worldwide, reminding them of the importance of standing firm in their beliefs and remaining faithful to God, even in the most challenging circumstances.
