Biography

Blessed Gratia of Cattaro, also known as Gratia of Kotor, Gracija, Grazia, and Graziano, was born on 27 October 1438 in Mul, Cattaro, Dalmatia (modern Kotor, Montenegro). He was the son of a poor fisherman and grew up working as an Adriatic fisherman and farmer.

In 1468, while on a trip to Venice, Italy, Gratia had a life-changing encounter. He heard a sermon by Blessed Simon of Camerino, which deeply touched his heart and stirred within him a desire for a more meaningful existence. Inspired by this experience, he made the courageous decision to give up his worldly life and devote himself to God's service.

Gratia joined the Augustinian Order as a lay brother at the monastery of Monte Ortono near Padua, Italy. He was known for his humble and diligent nature, and he wholeheartedly embraced the monastic life. For 15 years, Gratia tirelessly worked in the monastery's garden, sacristy, and various other tasks, displaying great dedication and faith.

Following his time in Monte Ortono, Gratia was transferred to the monastery of San Cristoforo on Murano, an island off the shore of Venice. It was there that he spent the remainder of his life, faithfully serving the community. He became renowned for his extraordinary gift of infused knowledge. This spiritual charism enabled him to possess knowledge beyond what could be explained by natural means, mystifying those around him.

Many witnesses reported that a heavenly light would radiate from Gratia's cell, signifying his deep spiritual connection and divine favor. His sanctity and reputation as a miracle worker attracted numerous pilgrims seeking his intercession and counsel. Despite his growing fame, Gratia remained humble and dedicated to his monastic duties and prayer life.

Gratia had a profound devotion to the Eucharist, and he spent much of his spare time in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. He found solace and strength in this intimate union with Christ, which fueled his compassion towards others and fueled his miraculous abilities.

Blessed Gratia of Cattaro died peacefully in Murano, Italy on 9 November 1508, after a life filled with holiness and extraordinary spiritual experiences. He passed away from natural causes, and his relics were eventually returned to his hometown of Mul, Montenegro during the 19th century.

Through the centuries, a cult of veneration developed around Blessed Gratia of Cattaro, acknowledging his sanctity and the many graces obtained through his intercession. Pope Leo XIII beatified Gratia on 6 June 1889, recognizing his exemplary life of virtue and confirming the validity of his cultus.

Blessed Gratia of Cattaro continues to inspire believers with his unwavering faith, his deep love for the Eucharist, and his remarkable spiritual gifts. He serves as a model of humility, devotion, and perseverance in the service of God and a source of hope for all who seek his intercession. His feast day is celebrated on 9 November, while the Augustinians commemorate him on 7 November. Some calendars also suggest 16 November and 22 December as alternative feast days in his honor.
