Blessed Giusto Samper

Biography

Blessed Giusto Samper, also known as Blessed Justus of Samper, was a devout Mercedarian friar who dedicated his life to the spiritual well-being of souls in Purgatory. Born in an unknown year, he lived during the 13th and 14th centuries and his exact birthdate remains obscure. Although there is little information available about his early life, it is believed that he possessed a strong theological background and exhibited great piety from a young age.

Blessed Giusto Samper's most notable achievement occurred in 1279 when he courageously ventured to the city of Tunis in Muslim-ruled Tunisia. During this time, many Christians were captured and enslaved by Muslim forces. Driven by his deep compassion and love for his fellow brethren, Blessed Giusto undertook the challenging task of ransoming these unfortunate captives. Through his relentless efforts, he was able to secure the release of 216 Christians, setting them free from their bondage.

However, Blessed Giusto's mission went beyond the physical liberation of his Christian brothers and sisters. He saw the opportunity to spread and preach the Catholic faith throughout this region, and so he diligently shared the message of Christ's love and salvation. As he traveled across Tunisia, he fearlessly preached the Gospel, exhorting both Christians and non-Christians alike to embrace the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Blessed Giusto Samper's tireless devotion to praying for the souls in Purgatory was another defining aspect of his spiritual life. He believed in the power of intercession and believed that through his fervent prayers, he could alleviate the suffering of these souls and bring them closer to their eternal salvation. By offering his own sacrifices and engaging in acts of mortification, he endeavored to increase the efficacy of his prayers and obtain God's mercy and grace for the souls in need.

Although the details of Blessed Giusto's death are uncertain, it is believed that he passed away around the year 1350 from natural causes. His life of unwavering faith and selfless dedication to the service of others earned him a place of great veneration within the Mercedarian Order and the Catholic Church. While he has not yet been officially canonized, his exemplary life and virtuous deeds have led to his beatification process, which is currently underway.
