Biography

Blessed Giuseppe Puglisi, also known as Pino Puglisi, was born on September 15, 1937, in Brancaccio, Palermo, Italy. He was the son of Carmelo and Giuseppa Fana Puglisi, a cobbler and a seamstress.

Giuseppe Puglisi's journey to holiness began when he was ordained as a priest on July 2, 1960, in the archdiocese of Palermo. Throughout his priesthood, he served as a parish priest in various areas, including Settacannoli, Romagnolo, Vadessi, Godrano, and Brancaccio in Italy. In these places, he actively engaged with the youth, particularly those living in the poorest neighborhoods, spreading awareness about the reforms of the Second Vatican Council and encouraging the active involvement of the laity in the Church.

Recognizing the importance of education, Blessed Giuseppe Puglisi also taught at several schools from 1962 to 1993. His teaching focused not only on academic subjects but also on imparting Christian values and principles to his students. His approach to education became a model for future teachers who aimed to instill the Christian perspective in their work.

During his time in Godrano, Giuseppe Puglisi played a significant role in ending the cycle of violent vendettas that plagued the community. He worked tirelessly to reconcile families torn apart by bloodshed, promoting forgiveness, peace, and harmonious relationships.

In addition to his pastoral and educational work, Blessed Giuseppe Puglisi collaborated with groups of nuns, priests, and laypeople to improve living conditions in impoverished areas and to denounce the collusion between elected officials and organized crime. His efforts to expose the influence of the mafia and seek justice for the marginalized made him a target for threats from these criminal elements.

Tragically, on September 15, 1993, on his 56th birthday, Giuseppe Puglisi was assassinated at his home by the mafia in Palermo for his relentless fight against organized crime. His assassination revealed the violence and corruption that had deeply rooted itself within Sicilian society.

This selfless priest's martyrdom did not go unrecognized. On June 28, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI officially recognized his martyrdom, paving the way for his beatification. On May 25, 2013, Pope Francis beatified Blessed Giuseppe Puglisi in a moving ceremony at the Stadio Renzo Barbera in Palermo, Italy. Cardinal Salvatore De Giorgi presided over the beatification celebration.

Today, the memory and example of Blessed Giuseppe Puglisi continue to inspire countless individuals, reminding them of the importance of speaking out against injustice, promoting peace and reconciliation, and fostering the involvement of the laity in the mission of the Church. The stole and crucifix that Giuseppe Puglisi wore during his priestly ministry are now housed in the Basilica of Saint Bartholomew on the Tiber Island in Rome, Italy, serving as a testament to his devotion and sacrifice.
