Biography

Blessed Giuseppe Girotti, born on 19 July 1905 in Alba, Cuneo, Italy, was a Dominican priest known for his courage, faith, and compassionate ministry to others. He made his religious profession in 1923 and was ordained on 3 August 1930.

Father Girotti's dedication to the field of scriptural studies led him to study at the prestigious École Biblique in Jerusalem, where he deepened his understanding of the Bible and its teachings. Equipped with this knowledge, he became a professor of scriptural studies at the Dominican Theological Seminary in Turin, Italy, serving as a mentor and guide to numerous students.

During World War II, Father Girotti courageously stood against the atrocities committed by the Nazi regime. He actively participated in the underground resistance movement, providing safe shelter and escape routes for Jews who were targeted by the Nazis. His selfless actions, motivated by his deep love for God and humanity, ultimately led to his arrest by the Nazi authorities on 19 August 1944.

Following his arrest, Father Girotti endured a harrowing journey from one concentration camp to another. Regardless of the harsh conditions and constant threat to his own life, he remained steadfast in his faith and continued to minister to his fellow prisoners, offering spiritual solace and support. His unwavering dedication to the well-being of others in the midst of unimaginable suffering exemplified true Christian virtue.

Tragically, Father Giuseppe Girotti's life was cut short on 1 April 1945, as he perished in the concentration camp at Dachau, Oberbayern, Germany. His martyrdom serves as a powerful testimony to his unyielding commitment to God and his fellow human beings.

Recognizing his exceptional virtue, Pope Francis granted Father Girotti the title of Venerable on 27 March 2013, acknowledging his heroic virtues and exemplary life. The beatification ceremony took place on 26 April 2014, led by Cardinal Angelo Amato, at the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Alba, Cuneo, Italy, Father Girotti's hometown.
