As a lay brother, Blessed Gil Belascoain Ilagorri lived a life of humility and simplicity, striving to emulate the virtues of Saint Vincent de Paul, the founder of the Vincentian Congregation. He committed himself to working in various charitable and spiritual activities, assisting the priests in their ministry of serving the poor and marginalized.
During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Gil Belascoain Ilagorri courageously maintained his faith amidst the persecution and violence that plagued the country. He continued his dedication to the Vincentian mission, providing spiritual support and compassionate assistance to those affected by the conflict.
Sadly, on 7 November 1936, Blessed Gil Belascoain Ilagorri was martyred for his unwavering commitment to his Catholic faith. He met his death in Paracuellos de Jarama, Madrid, Spain, a victim of the religious persecution that characterized the era. His martyrdom serves as a testament to his steadfast love for God and his unwavering devotion to his religious vocation.
After many years of being recognized for his martyrdom, Blessed Gil Belascoain Ilagorri was officially venerated on 23 March 2017 by Pope Francis. Following this decree, he was beatified on 11 November 2017 in a solemn ceremony held at the Palacio Vistalegre Arena in Carabanchel, Madrid, Spain. The beatification recognition was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato and Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra of Madrid, highlighting the significance of Blessed Gil Belascoain Ilagorri's sacrifice and his example of faith.
Today, blessed Gil Belascoain Ilagorri's life and martyrdom serve as an inspiration for all believers, reminding us of the importance of standing firm in our faith even in the face of adversity.
