Feast Day: September 9
Death: September 1, 9
Blessed George Douglas, also known as Blessed George Douglas of Edinburgh, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and is celebrated as one of the Martyrs of England, Scotland, and Wales. His exact date of birth is unknown, but it is believed to have taken place in the late 16th century.
As a young man, George Douglas traveled to Paris, France, to pursue his studies. It was during his time in Paris that he discerned a calling to the priesthood. After completing his education, he was ordained as a Catholic priest.
Upon returning to his homeland, George Douglas dedicated himself to the covert ministry of Catholics in England during a period of religious persecution. At the time, being a Catholic priest in England was considered a crime, and the Catholic population faced significant repression.
George Douglas worked tirelessly to provide spiritual support and sacraments to those who practiced their Catholic faith in secret. He risked his own safety and freedom to ensure that Catholics in England had access to the sacraments and pastoral care.
Sadly, George Douglas's covert activities eventually led to his capture. He was arrested in York, North Yorkshire, England, for the crime of being a Catholic priest. He was imprisoned and subjected to a harsh interrogation but remained steadfast in his faith.
On September 9, 1587, George Douglas was martyred by being hanged, drawn, and quartered in York. His brutal execution was meant to serve as a warning to other Catholics and discourage their allegiance to the Catholic Church.
Blessed George Douglas has since been recognized for his courageous witness and commitment to the Catholic faith. His martyrdom exemplified the strength and resilience of Catholics during a time of religious persecution in England.
In recognition of his sacrifice, Pope John Paul II decreed George Douglas's martyrdom on November 10, 1986. This decree was followed by his beatification on November 22, 1987, signifying his official recognition as one of the Blessed Martyrs of England, Scotland, and Wales.
Blessed George Douglas continues to be venerated by Catholics, particularly on his feast days of September 9 and November 22. His example serves as an inspiration to all those who face adversity in their commitment to their faith.
