Blessed Gaspar Koteda

Biography

Blessed Gaspar Koteda, also known as Gaspar Kodawake, was a young layman catechist in the archdiocese of Nagasaki, Japan. He was born in 1601 in Nagasaki, Japan, during a time when the Catholic faith was heavily suppressed in the country. Gaspar was known for his strong faith and his deep devotion to spreading the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Gaspar Koteda was a member of the Dominican Third Order, which was an association of lay people who followed the spirituality of the Dominican Order. As a tertiary, he embraced the charism of the Dominicans and sought to live out their principles of prayer, study, community, and preaching in his everyday life. Gaspar's dedication to his faith led him to become a catechist, sharing the Gospel and teaching the Catholic doctrine to others in his community.

During this period, the Tokugawa Shogunate implemented a strict policy to eradicate Christianity in Japan, perceiving it as a threat to their authority. Despite the oppressive conditions, Gaspar fearlessly continued to spread the message of Christ. As a result, he faced numerous hardships and dangers as he carried out his mission of evangelization.

On September 11, 1622, Gaspar Koteda was arrested due to his unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith. He was subsequently beheaded in Nishizaka, Nagasaki, Japan, along with several other Christians who also courageously refused to renounce their beliefs. Gaspar's martyrdom is a testament to his strong conviction and his willingness to sacrifice his life for his faith.

Gaspar Koteda, together with 204 other Martyrs of Japan, was beatified on May 7, 1867, by Pope Blessed Pius IX. Their beatification recognized their heroic witness to the Catholic faith and their unwavering loyalty to Christ even in the face of persecution. Gaspar Koteda's feast day is celebrated on September 11, and he is also commemorated on September 10 as one of the 205 Martyrs of Japan.

As a Dominican tertiary and a layman catechist, Blessed Gaspar Koteda demonstrated extraordinary dedication and bravery in proclaiming the Gospel during a time of intense persecution. His life stands as a shining example of unwavering faithfulness and commitment to Christ, inspiring believers throughout generations to live their faith boldly and authentically.
