Biography

Blessed Gabriel Olivares Roda, also known as Gabriel Olivares Roda, was a Franciscan Friar Minor and a Catholic priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He is venerated and considered a Blessed in the Catholic Church.

Gabriel Olivares Roda was born on March 10, 1888, in Baza, a town in the province of Granada in Spain. He grew up in a devout Catholic family and exhibited a strong desire to serve God from an early age. Olivier Roda entered the Order of Friars Minor, commonly known as the Franciscans, and was ordained as a priest.

During the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, Spain was divided into factions, with political and religious tensions running high. As a priest and a religious, Gabriel Olivares Roda's faith and priestly duties placed him in a precarious position. He continued to minister to the spiritual needs of the faithful, offering solace, guidance, and the sacraments despite the dangers surrounding him.

On December 20, 1936, in the town of Viator, located in the province of Almeria, Gabriel Olivares Roda was martyred for his unwavering commitment to his faith. Given the significance of his sacrifice, Pope Francis acknowledged Gabriel Olivares Roda's martyrdom on June 14, 2016, with a decree of martyrdom, venerated him as a Blessed. On March 25, 2017, Pope Francis further honored him by beatifying him, a step toward possible canonization as a saint.

The beatification ceremony took place in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce, Almería, Spain and was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato. This solemn event was attended by numerous faithful, including pilgrims and devotees from near and far, who paid tribute to the life and sacrifice of Blessed Gabriel Olivares Roda.
