Feast Day: January 10
Blessed Fulk of Montdidier, also known as Fulco, was a renowned Premonstratensian canon who lived during the late 11th century in Montdidier, Somme, Picardy, France. He is celebrated within the Premonstratensian order on his feast day, which falls on the 10th of January.
Fulk's journey in religious life led him to be elected as the second prior of the Saint-Jean monastery in Amiens, France in the year 1130. His dedication and leadership skills soon became evident, and he continued to serve as the head of the monastery for the remaining 26 years of his life. Under his guidance, the Saint-Jean monastery flourished, witnessing significant growth and spiritual development.
The rapid increase in the number of brothers led to a pressing need for additional space. As a solution, Fulk oversaw the expansion and elevation of the monastery to an abbey in 1135. The new status of the abbey provided an opportunity to further advance the spiritual mission and influence of the community. Fulk proudly assumed the position of abbot, taking on the responsibility of shepherding his fellow monks in their pursuit of holiness.
With the continued expansion of the community, the original monastery buildings in Amiens soon became insufficient to accommodate the growing number of brothers. Consequently, Fulk facilitated the establishment of a second location outside the city. This new location allowed those seeking solitude and quiet to find solace away from the bustling environment of Amiens. Fulk's leadership proved instrumental in nurturing the spiritual growth of the brothers and creating an environment conducive to their contemplative life.
Throughout his tenure as abbot, Blessed Fulk of Montdidier displayed remarkable wisdom, piety, and humility. He was known for his compassionate nature and profound understanding of the monastic life. His commitment and dedication to the Premonstratensian order left an indelible mark on the lives of those he shepherded, inspiring many to follow in his footsteps.
Blessed Fulk peacefully passed away in the year 1157, having lived a life of exemplary devotion and service. Although he has not been formally canonized, his virtuous life, profound influence, and the veneration he received from his fellow Premonstratensians continue to affirm his blessedness. His memory is cherished within the Premonstratensian order, where he is remembered as a guiding light, exemplifying the virtues of selfless service and spiritual guidance.
