Blessed Fructuoso Pérez Márquez, born on 9 February 1884 in Almería, Spain, was a devout Catholic known for his strong commitment to his faith. Feeling a call to religious life, Fructuoso initially pursued his studies in the seminary. However, he ultimately made the decision to leave the seminary and instead married María Barceló Toro.
Despite not becoming a priest, Fructuoso's longing for a spiritual life led him to become a Dominican tertiary in the diocese of Almería. As a member of this lay religious order, he remained highly engaged with his faith and actively participated in various church activities. Notably, Fructuoso possessed musical talents and could play the piano and sing beautifully. He served as a cantor in the Cathedral of Almería, using his gift of music to praise and worship God.
In addition to his devotion to Catholicism, Fructuoso was also deeply committed to promoting Catholic and conservative causes. He became the editor and director of the newspaper La Independencia, which embraced these ideals and supported them passionately. Through his work, Fructuoso sought to disseminate the truth and uphold the principles and teachings of the Catholic Church.
Tragically, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War brought turmoil and persecution to the Catholic faithful in Spain. On 28 July 1936, Fructuoso Pérez Márquez was imprisoned by the Republican forces, who had aligned with the Communist regime. Despite being imprisoned, he remained steadfast in his faith and unwavering in his commitment to his beliefs.
On 15 August 1936, Fructuoso was ruthlessly executed by being shot on the beach at La Garrofa, Almería. His martyrdom was a result of his refusal to renounce his Catholic faith and his unwavering commitment to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Fructuoso Pérez Márquez's life and death serve as a testament to his courage, devotion, and unwavering faith, making him an exemplary model for all Catholics.
Recognizing his sanctity and martyrdom, Pope Francis declared Fructuoso Pérez Márquez venerable on 11 December 2019, signifying that he lived a life of heroic virtue. Although he has not yet been beatified, his cause for beatification is under consideration.
On every 15th of August, the Catholic Church commemorates the martyrdom of Blessed Fructuoso Pérez Márquez, honoring his heroic witness and devotion to his faith.
