Blessed Franciszek Stryjas, also known as Franciszek Stryjas, was born on 26 January 1882 in Popów, Szczytniki, Kalisz, Poland. He was the son of farmers and grew up in a humble environment. Franciszek led a devout Catholic life and was known for his strong faith.
In 1901, Franciszek married Józefa Kobylka, and together they settled in Kuczowola, Poland. They were blessed with seven children, and Franciszek was a loving and dedicated father to them. Unfortunately, Józefa passed away due to natural causes, leaving Franciszek a widower.
After the death of his first wife, Franciszek married Józefa Nosal and moved to Takomysl, Poland. Despite the hardships he faced in his personal life, Franciszek remained steadfast in his faith and committed to serving God and his community.
During the harsh Nazi occupation of Poland in World War II, all the priests in the area were arrested. In the absence of clergy, Franciszek felt called to serve the spiritual needs of the community. He began teaching religion to children, preparing them for their First Communion and providing guidance in their faith.
Unfortunately, the Gestapo became aware of Franciszek's activities and arrested him. He was imprisoned in Kalisz, Poland, where he endured unimaginable suffering and torture at the hands of his captors. Over a period of ten agonizing days, Franciszek remained steadfast in his faith and resilience.
On 31 July 1944, Franciszek Stryjas was martyred as a result of the brutal treatment he endured in prison. He died a heroic death, remaining faithful to his beliefs until the very end. His witness to the Catholic faith serves as a powerful testament to the courage and strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
Recognizing his martyrdom and virtue, Blessed Franciszek Stryjas was venerated on 23 March 1999 by Pope John Paul II, who issued a decree of martyrdom. On 13 June 1999, Pope John Paul II beatified him during a ceremony in Warsaw, Poland.
Blessed Franciszek Stryjas is honored as one of the 108 Martyrs of World War II, a group of Catholic faithful who were persecuted and killed for their faith during the war. His feast days are celebrated on 31 July, the anniversary of his martyrdom, and 12 June as one of the 108 Martyrs of World War II.
As a devoted husband, father, and servant of God, Blessed Franciszek Stryjas embodies the virtues of love, sacrifice, and unwavering faith. His life and martyrdom inspire us to remain steadfast in our beliefs and to stand up for justice and the Gospel even in the face of persecution.
