Biography

Blessed Franciszek Drzewiecki, also known as Reverend Franciszek Drzewiecki, was a Catholic priest and member of the Orionist religious congregation. He was born on February 26, 1908, in Zduny, Lódzkie, Poland, into a devout Catholic family. After completing his early education, Franciszek joined the Orionists and pursued his theological studies at their mother-house in Tortona, Italy.

On June 6, 1936, Franciszek Drzewiecki was ordained as a priest, dedicating himself to the service of God and the Church. Following his ordination, he returned to Poland and began teaching at the college of Zdunska Wola, imparting his knowledge and faith to the next generation of priests.

As his ministry continued to flourish, Father Drzewiecki was appointed as the parish priest in Wloclawek, Poland, where he provided pastoral care and guidance to the faithful. His deep devotion to the Eucharist was evident through his strong belief in its real presence.

During the Nazi persecutions in World War II, Father Drzewiecki's courageous faith was tested. On November 7, 1939, he was arrested and sentenced to forced labor at the Dachau concentration camp farms in Germany. Despite the harsh conditions and brutal treatment endured by the prisoners, he faithfully carried a small box containing consecrated hosts around his neck. Throughout his time working in the fields, Father Drzewiecki would engage in Eucharistic adoration, offering solace and spiritual strength to himself and his fellow prisoners.

Sadly, on August 10, 1942, Father Drzewiecki was tragically gassed at the prison camp in Dachau, Oberbayern, Germany. However, his unwavering faith in the face of persecution and his devotion to the Eucharist earned him the status of a martyr. He became one of the 108 Martyrs of World War II and his feast day is celebrated on August 10. Additionally, as part of this group, his feast day is also commemorated on June 12.

Recognizing his holiness and sacrifice, Pope John Paul II venerated Franciszek Drzewiecki on March 26, 1999, through a decree of martyrdom. Following this, on June 13, 1999, Pope John Paul II beatified him in Warsaw, Poland, officially bestowing the title "Blessed" upon him.

Blessed Franciszek Drzewiecki serves as an inspiration to all believers, demonstrating profound faith, courage, and devotion to the Eucharist even amidst the darkest times. His memory continues to be cherished and his intercession sought by the faithful around the world.
