Death: August 1, 2
Blessed Francisco Tomás Serer, also known as Francisco Tomás Serer Giner, was born on 10 October 1911 in Alcalalí, Alicante, Spain. He was the son of Antonio and Dolores.
From a young age, Francisco showed a deep devotion to his faith. He studied with the Capuchin tertiaries and was greatly influenced by their spirituality. Inspired by their way of life, Francisco decided to join the Capuchin Tertiary Fathers and Brothers of Our Lady of Sorrows in 1928.
After entering the religious order, Francisco pursued his studies and was ordained as a priest in 1934. He continued his education, studying in Belgium and France. In addition to his theological studies, Francisco had a keen interest in medicine and also pursued a degree in that field at the Central University of Madrid.
During this time, Spain was embroiled in the Spanish Civil War, a tumultuous and violent period in the country's history. As a Catholic priest, Francisco faced persecution for his religious beliefs. Sadly, he was martyred for the crime of being a priest on 2 August 1936. He was unjustly shot against the wall of the Prince of Asturias Reformatory in Madrid.
Despite the tragic circumstances of his death, Francisco left a lasting legacy of faith and courage. His martyrdom was an embodiment of his unwavering commitment to Christ and the Church. Recognizing his sacrifice, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable on 18 December 2000 through a decree of martyrdom.
Lastly, on 11 March 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified Francisco Tomás Serer, elevating him to the status of Blessed. His feast day is celebrated on 2 August each year, commemorating the day of his martyrdom. Blessed Francisco Tomás Serer serves as an inspiration to all believers, reminding us of the strength and dedication that guided his life, even in the face of persecution.
