Feast Day: August 28
Birth: March 30, 1872
Death: August 1, 28
Blessed Francisco Romero Ortega, born on 30 March 1872 in Almería, Spain, was the son of a tailor and the brother of Blessed José Romero Ortega. His deep faith and desire to serve the Church led him to study at the seminary of San Indalecio in Almería, where he received his priestly ordination in May 1895.
Following his ordination, Father Francisco dedicated over 40 years of his life to serving as a priest in the diocese of Almería. He was known for his unwavering commitment to his pastoral duties and his love for the people he served. Throughout his ministry, he held various positions, serving as a parish priest in different locations, including Albanchez, Berja, and Huércal-Overa.
In addition to his parish work, Father Francisco also served as the chaplain of the Servants of Mary in 1926. He provided spiritual guidance and support to the members of this religious community, who dedicated themselves to prayer and service.
Father Francisco's dedication to the Church extended beyond his parish and religious community. In 1929, he participated as a delegate in the Synod of Almería, where he actively contributed to discussions and decisions relating to the life and mission of the Church in the diocese.
Tragically, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Father Francisco, along with his brother José, both fell victim to persecution for their faith. On 28 August 1936, in Huércal, Almería, they were captured, subjected to brutal treatment, and ultimately martyred. They were shot, blinded, and burned, bearing witness to their unwavering commitment to Christ and the Gospel.
Their martyrdom and steadfast faith in the face of persecution have not been forgotten. Blessed Francisco Romero Ortega, along with his brother José, was venerated by Pope Francis on 14 June 2016 through a decree of martyrdom. On 25 March 2017, they were beatified by Pope Francis in a solemn ceremony held in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce, Almería, Spain, presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.
Today, Blessed Francisco Romero Ortega is remembered as a shining example of courage, dedication, and fidelity to the Christian faith. His life stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith in the face of adversity, and he continues to inspire those seeking to live a life of profound devotion and service to God and others. His feast day is celebrated on 28 August each year.
