Biography

Blessed Francisco Morquillas Fernández, born on 16 June 1889 in Sarracín, Burgos, Spain, was a devoted priest and a member of the Vincentian Congregation of the Mission. He is recognized as a martyr of the Spanish Civil War, a period of great religious persecution in Spain.

From a young age, Francisco showed a deep sense of faith and a calling to serve the Church. He entered the Vincentian Congregation of the Mission, also known as the Lazarists, which was founded by Saint Vincent de Paul, and was ordained a priest in the congregation.

During the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution was rampant, specifically targeting Catholic priests and religious. Despite the danger, Father Francisco remained committed to his vocation, providing spiritual guidance and support to those in need. He fearlessly continued to minister to the faithful, aware of the risks he faced.

Tragically, on 30 November 1936, Father Francisco Morquillas Fernández was martyred in Paracuellos de Jarama, Madrid. He was one of many victims who suffered persecution and execution due to their unwavering faith.

Recognizing his heroic sacrifice, Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrdom on 23 March 2017, venerating Father Francisco as a Blessed. Later, on 11 November 2017, Pope Francis presided over the beatification ceremony at the Palacio Vistalegre Arena in Carabanchel, Madrid. The ceremony was attended by numerous faithful, including Cardinal Angelo Amato and Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra of Madrid.

Blessed Francisco Morquillas Fernández, with his unwavering dedication to the Catholic faith and his ultimate sacrifice, serves as an inspiration and a testament to the strength and courage of the martyrs of the Spanish Civil War.
