Biography

Blessed Francisco Martínez Granero, also known as Feliciano, was a monk and member of the Hospitallers of Saint John of God. He was born on 23 January 1863 in Taberno, Almería, Spain.

From a young age, Francisco felt a calling to the religious life, and he entered the Hospitallers of Saint John of God, a Catholic religious order dedicated to providing care and assistance to the sick and the needy. He embraced the monastic life with great fervor and was known for his unwavering faith, humility, and compassion.

In his role as a member of the Hospitallers, Francisco dedicated his life to serving those in need, particularly during a time of great social and political unrest in Spain. The Spanish Civil War, which erupted in 1936, brought about a violent persecution of Catholics, especially religious clergy and members of religious orders.

Unfortunately, Francisco became a victim of the turmoil and violence of the Spanish Civil War. On 4 October 1936, in La Malvarrosa, Valencia, he was martyred for his faith, refusing to renounce his religious beliefs even in the face of great suffering and adversity. He remained steadfastly loyal to his vows and his dedication to the service of the sick and the poor, even at the cost of his own life.

The life and martyrdom of Francisco Martínez Granero were recognized and honored by the Catholic Church. He was venerated on 5 July 2013 by Pope Francis, who declared him a martyr. On 13 October 2013, Pope Francis beatified him, recognizing his holiness and his ultimate sacrifice for the sake of his faith.

Blessed Francisco Martínez Granero stands as a shining example of unwavering faith, selfless service, and courageous witness in the face of persecution. His life serves as an inspiration for all those who strive to live out their religious calling with love, compassion, and unwavering devotion to God and humanity.
