Blessed Francisco Marco Martínez, born on 1 February 1917 in Odón, Teruel, Spain, was a devout Catholic and member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by St. Anthony Mary Claret. He lived during a tumultuous time in Spanish history, as the country was marred by the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s.
As a young man, Francisco felt a strong call to serve God and joined the Claretians, dedicating his life to the service of others. He exhibited a deep commitment to his faith and a strong desire to spread the message of Christ's love and salvation.
Tragically, the violent conflicts of the Spanish Civil War would cut short Francisco's promising life. He met his martyrdom on 19 October 1936 in Mas Claret, Sant Pere dels Arquells, Lleida, Spain, along with many other members of the Claretians who were targeted for their religious beliefs during this turbulent period. The beatification ceremony took place on 21 October 2017 at the illustrious Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato.
Today, Blessed Francisco Marco Martínez is revered as one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs. His feast day is celebrated on 19 October, the day of his martyrdom, and also on 1 February, in commemoration of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs as a collective group.
