Blessed Francisco Maqueda López, also known as Francisco López Maqueda, was born on 10 October 1914 in Villacañas, Toledo, Spain. He was a devoted Catholic and had a calling to serve God from a young age. Francisco entered the seminary in the archdiocese of Toledo to pursue his vocation and become a priest.

On 5 June 1936, Francisco was a seminarian in the archdiocese of Toledo when the Spanish Civil War erupted, which led to severe anti-Christian persecutions. Unfortunately, he became a victim of this violence when he was imprisoned on 11 September 1936.

While in prison, Francisco remained steadfast in his faith and continued to minister to his fellow prisoners, offering spiritual guidance and praying the Rosary with them. His devotion to God and his compassionate nature provided solace to those who were also enduring the hardships of imprisonment during this tumultuous time.

Tragically, in the early morning of 12 September 1936, Francisco Maqueda López was executed by being shot in Dosbarrios, Toledo, Spain. He was only 21 years old at the time of his martyrdom.

The Catholic Church recognized Francisco's exemplary life and the sacrifice he made for his faith. On 28 April 2006, Pope Benedict XVI declared him venerable through a decree of martyrdom, acknowledging his heroic virtue and the circumstances surrounding his death.

Francisco Maqueda López was formally beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on 28 October 2007, further affirming his status as a blessed in the eyes of the Catholic Church. His feast day is celebrated on 12 September, the anniversary of his martyrdom.

The life and martyrdom of Blessed Francisco Maqueda López serve as a testament to the courage and unwavering faith of countless individuals who faced persecution during the Spanish Civil War.
