Death: November 22, 1936
Blessed Francisco Lahoz Moliner, also known as Brother Bertrán Francisco, was born on 15 October 1912 in Campos, Teruel, Spain. He was baptized just one day after his birth, receiving the grace of the sacrament of baptism at an early age.
At the age of 13, young Francisco joined the Brothers of the Christian Schools at Cambrils, Spain on 10 August 1925. He dedicated himself to a life of teaching and catechesis, aspiring to follow in the footsteps of his religious brethren.
Francisco's commitment to his vocation led him to make his vows as a religious brother on 2 February 1929, pledging his life to serve God and others through education. He wholeheartedly embraced the charism of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, whose founder, Saint John Baptist de La Salle, had a deep devotion to teaching and the formation of young people.
As a teacher and catechist of novices, Brother Bertrán Francisco played a vital role in the spiritual and intellectual formation of young men entering religious life. He shared his knowledge and faith with enthusiasm, leaving a lasting impact on those he guided.
Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, the violent and tumultuous period in Spain's history, Brother Bertrán Francisco was imprisoned for his religious beliefs. Faced with persecution, he remained steadfast in his faith, refusing to renounce his commitment to God and his religious community.
On 22 November 1936, Brother Bertrán Francisco was martyred for his unwavering devotion to the Catholic faith. He met his death bravely, remaining faithful until the very end. His martyrdom is a testament to his deep love for Christ and his willingness to lay down his life as a witness to the Gospel.
Brother Bertrán Francisco was laid to rest in a common grave in Valencia, Spain. However, his memory lives on, inspiring countless others with his courageous witness and commitment to the Gospel values.
Recognizing his heroic virtue and martyrdom, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable on 20 December 1999, acknowledging the holiness of his life and his sacrifice. Later, on 11 March 2001, Pope John Paul II presided over Brother Bertrán Francisco's beatification ceremony, celebrating his entrance into the ranks of the blessed. The beatification of Blessed Francisco Lahoz Moliner serves as an acknowledgment of his sanctity and an invitation for the faithful to seek his intercession.
Blessed Francisco Lahoz Moliner's life and martyrdom remind us of the immense courage and faith that characterized the lives of many men and women who faced persecution for their religious beliefs. His example encourages us to embrace our own vocations with zeal and to remain steadfast in the face of adversity. May his intercession and prayer inspire and guide us on our own journeys of faith.
