Biography

Blessed Francisco López Navarette, known for his dedication to the poor and his artistic talents, was born on 2 March 1892 in Villanueva del Arzobispo, Jaén, Spain. He grew up in a devout Catholic family and exhibited a strong calling to the priesthood from an early age. Pursuing his vocation, he was ordained as a priest in the diocese of Jaén.

After his ordination, Father Francisco celebrated his first Mass on 1 January 1917 in his hometown. He then began his ministry as a parish priest in Cañada Catena, Spain, where he became renowned for his compassionate outreach to the underprivileged. Recognizing the need for education among the working adults in his parish, he established a night school to provide them with the opportunity to learn and improve their lives. Father Francisco's dedication and commitment to serving the poor set him apart as a true servant of God.

Eventually, Father Francisco returned to Villanueva del Arzobispo, Spain, where he served as chaplain of the Daughters of Christ the King and as a priest in the parish of San Andrés. He continued his tireless efforts to care for the less fortunate and impart knowledge to adults who had been forced to work from an early age. In addition to his pastoral duties, Father Francisco was also a gifted artist, using his skills to paint and sculpt images of Our Lady, offering a visual representation of his devotion to the Blessed Virgin.

On 12 August 1933, Father Francisco was appointed as the Archpriest of Orcera, Spain, further expanding his sphere of influence. Despite his increasing responsibilities, he remained committed to the welfare of his parishioners and continued his educational endeavors. However, during the tumultuous years of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Francisco López Navarette's faith and compassion would ultimately lead to his martyrdom.

Tragically, on 28 August 1936, Father Francisco was shot and killed at tunnel 13 on the Bauza-Utiel railroad in Orcera, Jaén, Spain. His unwavering commitment to his faith and ministry, his devotion to the poor, and his artistic talents marked him as a true saint of the Church. His martyrdom was a testament to his willingness to lay down his life for the sake of the Gospel.

Blessed Francisco López Navarette's heroic virtues and sacrifice were recognized by Pope Francis, who declared him venerable on 27 March 2013 through a decree of martyrdom. Pope Francis beatified him on 27 October 2013, commemorating his beatification recognition in Tarragona, Spain. Today, Blessed Francisco López Navarette continues to be venerated, his life serving as an inspiration to all who strive to follow the path of selflessness, faith, and love for others.
