Biography

Blessed Francisco Escura Foix, also known as Blessed Francisco Foix Escura, was a priest of the diocese of Córdoba, Spain, who tragically lost his life as a martyr during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 20 May 1898 in Benicarló, Castellón, Spain.

Blessed Francisco grew up in a devout Catholic family and displayed deep piety from a young age. Recognizing his vocation to the priesthood, he entered seminary and completed his studies, ardently preparing himself for a life dedicated to the service of God and his people. He was ordained a priest for the diocese of Córdoba and began his ministry there, faithfully carrying out his pastoral duties and engaging in various charitable works to uplift the local community.

However, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, the country was torn apart by ideological divisions and violence. As the conflict extended into Córdoba, the faithful were subjected to persecution for their religious beliefs. In the midst of this chaotic and dangerous environment, Blessed Francisco fearlessly continued his ministerial work, providing spiritual support and guidance to those in need.

Tragically, on 6 September 1936, Blessed Francisco met his martyrdom. He was arrested and captured by anti-Catholic forces who sought to silence his message of faith and love. Despite facing intense persecution, he remained steadfast in his commitment to Christ and the Church. Courageously facing his captors, he embraced his fate with grace and forgave those who unjustly persecuted him.

Blessed Francisco Escura Foix's unwavering faith, dedication to his ministry, and courageous witness to the Gospel earned him the recognition of the Church. His martyrdom was officially documented and affirmed by Pope Francis on 23 November 2020, who declared him venerable. Furthermore, on 16 October 2021, Pope Francis presided over the beatification recognition ceremony at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain. This joyous event, led by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, elevated Blessed Francisco to the rank of blessed, acknowledging his heroic virtue and his sacrifice for the faith.

Today, the faithful look to Blessed Francisco Escura Foix as a shining example of selflessness, steadfast faith, and courage in the face of persecution. His life serves as a reminder of the enduring power of faith and the call to live the Gospel message, regardless of the challenges and dangers that may arise.
