Biography

Blessed Francisco Edreira Mosquera, also known as Francisco Edreira Mosquera was a devout Catholic and a member of the Salesians of Don Bosco. He is remembered as a martyr who lost his life during the Spanish Civil War.

Francisco was born on November 25, 1914, in La Coruña, Spain. From an early age, he exhibited a deep love for God and a strong desire to serve others. Recognizing his vocation, he joined the Salesians of Don Bosco, a religious congregation founded by Saint John Bosco, known for their dedication to the education and spiritual guidance of young people.

As a Salesian, Francisco embraced the charism of his order and diligently worked towards the betterment of his community. He was known for his kindness, humility, and genuine care for the young individuals he encountered. Francisco's zeal led him to actively participate in various apostolic works, including teaching catechism, organizing youth activities, and providing support to those in need.

Tragically, during the tumultuous years of the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution swept across the country. On September 29, 1936, Francisco Edreira Mosquera, along with many other Catholics and religious figures, became a victim of this violence. While being aware of the dangers surrounding him, Francisco steadfastly held onto his faith, remaining devoted to his religious calling until the end.

The heroic witness of Francisco's life and his unwavering faith in the face of opposition were recognized by the Catholic Church. On June 26, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI declared that Francisco Edreira Mosquera should be venerated as a martyr. In doing so, the Church acknowledged the ultimate sacrifice that he made for the sake of his faith.

Following the recognition of his martyrdom, Francisco was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on October 28, 2007. The beatification ceremony was a significant tribute to his holy life, serving as an inspiration for Catholics worldwide.
