Biography

Blessed Francisco Cástor Sojo López, also known as Father Francisco, was born on 28 March 1881 in Madrigalejo, Cáceres, Spain. He dedicated his life to the service of God and the Catholic Church, ultimately becoming a martyr for his faith.

Francisco's journey in the priesthood began when he studied at the seminary of Plasencia, Spain. It was there that he joined the Hermandad de Sacerdotes Operarios Diocesanos (Diocesan Laborer Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus) on 11 October 1903. His strong devotion and commitment to his vocation led to his ordination as a priest on 19 December 1903.

Throughout his years of service, Father Francisco worked diligently in various colleges and seminaries across Spain. He imparted his knowledge and faith to young minds, serving and teaching in the cities of Toledo, Plasencia, Badajoz, Segovia, and Astorga. His dedication to educating and inspiring others made him a beloved figure in the communities he served.

In 1933, Father Francisco was assigned to the seminary in Ciudad Real, Spain. Unfortunately, this was amidst a turbulent time in Spanish history, as the Spanish Civil War broke out. Despite the dangers and uncertainties surrounding him, he steadfastly continued his mission to bring hope and the message of God's love to those in need.

Tragically, on 12 September 1936, Father Francisco was captured by militiamen solely for the crime of being a priest. Just a few hours after his seizure, he was brutally murdered, sacrificing his life as a testament to his unwavering faith in Christ. His martyrdom serves as a powerful symbol of devotion and the ultimate price many faithful Catholics paid during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War.

The martyrdom and heroic witness of Father Francisco Cástor Sojo López did not go unnoticed. On 29 September 2020, Pope Francis recognized the veneration of Father Francisco and decreed his martyrdom. This significant recognition by the Pope paved the way for the beatification ceremony, which took place on 30 October 2021. The beatification celebration was held in the grandeur of the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora Santa María in Tortosa, Spain, honoring Father Francisco and his enduring legacy of faith.

Today, Blessed Francisco Cástor Sojo López is remembered as a shining example of a faithful servant of God, his life representing selfless dedication and the courage to lay down one's life for the sake of the Gospel. His feast day is celebrated on 13 September, offering an opportunity for the Catholic faithful to honor his memory and seek his intercession.

Blessed Francisco Cástor Sojo López continues to inspire Catholics around the world, reminding us of the importance of our faith and the sacrifices made by those who came before us.
