Blessed Francis Ruiz

Biography

Blessed Francis Ruiz, also known as Francesco, was a Mercedarian missionary born in 1546 in Rioja, Spain. He dedicated his life to spreading the Catholic faith in the New World, particularly in South America. In 1569, he embarked on a mission to Chile and later worked in Ecuador.

Francis eventually arrived in Cusco, Peru, where he joined the Mercedarian convent. Known for his zealous preaching and deep devotion, he tirelessly served the indigenous population in the region. As a member of the Mercedarian Order, he adhered to the principles of freedom and liberation, often assisting in the redemption of captives and slaves.

Tragically, while engaged in his missionary work, Blessed Francis Ruiz was martyred by pagan natives who rejected his message. In his unwavering commitment to sharing the Gospel, he faced persecution and sacrifice, ultimately giving his life for his faith.

Blessed Francis Ruiz's feast day is celebrated on December 29th, commemorating his martyrdom. Although he has not been officially canonized as a saint, his virtuous life and martyrdom have made him worthy of veneration.
