Tragically, on 11 December 1964, while serving in the midst of this violent conflict, Blessed Francesco Spoto was brutally attacked by Simba rebels.
Refusing to retaliate or harbor resentment, he demonstrated an extraordinary capacity for forgiveness, extending his mercy to his assailants. Despite sustaining severe injuries during the assault, Blessed Francesco Spoto endured immense pain and suffering for 11 agonizing days before succumbing to his wounds on 27 December 1964. His death was a testament to his unwavering faith, love for humanity, and the courage with which he faced adversity.

The beatification ceremony was a grand celebration held at Palermo, Sicily, and was officiated by Cardinal Salvatore de Giorgi. Blessed Francesco Spoto's feast day is observed on 27 December, commemorating the day he attained the crown of martyrdom. Additionally, the Archdiocese of Agrigento in Italy celebrates his feast day on 24 September, honoring his local roots and the profound impact he had on his community.
