Blessed Francesco FaÖ di Bruno, born on 29 March 1825 in Alessandria, Italy, was the youngest of twelve children in a noble family. His parents, Louis FaÖ di Bruno, Marquis of Bruno, and Carolina Milanesi, were wealthy aristocrats.
Francesco displayed exceptional intellect from a young age. He pursued his education diligently, studying mathematics, geography, surveying, and cartography. He also served in the army of Savoy and eventually achieved the rank of officer in the corps of engineers.
In 1853, Francesco graduated from the renowned Sorbonne University in Paris, earning degrees in mathematics and astronomy. His exceptional skills and knowledge in these fields led to his appointment at the prestigious French National Observatory two years later. During his time there, he made significant contributions to the field of astronomy.
However, Francesco felt a calling to religious life and discerned a vocation to the priesthood. He returned to Italy and was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Turin. Despite his commitment to the priesthood, he never abandoned his passion for mathematics and continued his scholarly pursuits in this field.
As a professor of mathematics in Turin, Father Francesco FaÖ di Bruno wrote extensively on various mathematical theories, earning him recognition and respect in the academic community. His profound understanding of the subject made him a sought-after lecturer and mentor.
Alongside his scholarly endeavors, Blessed Francesco FaÖ di Bruno dedicated himself to charitable works. He founded the Society of Saint Zita, an organization providing aid and support to the poor and the marginalized. He also established the Minim Sisters of Our Lady of Suffrage, a congregation of religious sisters committed to serving those in need.
Moved by his compassion and concern for the welfare of women in difficult circumstances, Father Francesco founded a home for unwed mothers, offering them shelter, assistance, and support during challenging times. Additionally, he founded a school that stood as a testament to his commitment to education and the empowerment of others.
Blessed Francesco FaÖ di Bruno died on 27 March 1888 in Turin, Italy, following a life of great service and devotion to God and humanity. Recognized for his exceptional virtue and holiness, Pope Paul VI venerated him on 14 June 1971, declaring his heroic virtues. Later, Pope John Paul II beatified him on 25 September 1988, acknowledging his sanctity and the impact of his charitable works and academic contributions.
Today, Blessed Francesco FaÖ di Bruno is remembered as a scholar, mathematician, priest, and dedicated servant of God, whose life serves as an inspiration for all those who aspire to combine intellectual pursuits with a deep faith and commitment to helping the most vulnerable in society. The school he founded in Turin proudly bears his name, ensuring that his legacy continues to shape the lives and education of many.
