Feast Day: September 28
Birth: August 20, 1916
Death: September 28, 1936
Blessed Francesc Xavier Ponsa Casallach, also known as Blessed Francis Xavier Ponsa, was a devoted Catholic who dedicated his life to serving God and others. He was born on August 20, 1916, in Moiá, a town in the Diocese of Vic, Barcelona, Spain.
From a young age, Francesc exhibited a deep faith and a strong desire to help those in need. He became a member of Catholic Action Youth, a Catholic movement that aimed to promote the active participation of young people in the Church and society. This served as a platform for Francesc to further develop his spiritual life and engage in charitable works.
Inspired by the example of selflessness and compassion shown by the Hospitallers of Saint John of God, Francesc decided to join their community. He entered the Hospitallers on February 20, 1935, and later became a novice in the community of San Baudilio de Llobregat, Barcelona, on June 2, 1936.
Sadly, Francesc's journey of religious devotion and service was cut short due to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. Less than three months after becoming a novice, on September 28, 1936, he was martyred in San Felíu de Codinas, a town in Barcelona, Spain. His unwavering faith and commitment to his vocation led to his ultimate sacrifice.
Blessed Francesc Xavier Ponsa Casallach is commemorated on September 28, both as his feast day and alongside other Martyred Hospitallers of Spain. Their shared feast day is also celebrated on July 30.
Recognizing his heroic virtue and the circumstances of his death, Pope John Paul II proclaimed Francesc Xavier Ponsa Casallach as venerable on May 14, 1991. Then, on October 25, 1992, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II.
Although specific details regarding his representation are not provided, Blessed Francesc's legacy of unwavering faith and dedication to the service of others continues to inspire individuals around the world. His life exemplifies the selflessness and sacrificial love that characterize the lives of the martyrs of the Catholic Church.
