Death: August 1, 1936
Blessed Francesc De Paula Soteras Culla, also known as Father Rafael Maria of Mataró, was a Franciscan Capuchin friar who was born on April 12, 1902, in Mataró, Barcelona, Spain. He devoted his life to the service of God and the Catholic Church, following the footsteps of Saint Francis of Assisi.
Francesc De Paula Soteras Culla joined the Capuchin Order and professed his vows on April 13, 1923, committing himself to a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience. He continued his theological studies and was ordained as a priest on February 1, 1925, at the young age of 22.
During a turbulent time in Spain's history, marked by political unrest and the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Francesc De Paula Soteras Culla fearlessly proclaimed his faith and identity as a Capuchin friar. Despite the risks involved, he did not shy away from admitting his religious vocation even when confronted by Marxists.
Tragically, in 1936, during the Spanish Civil War, the fervor to eradicate religious influence led to the persecution and execution of clergy members. Father Rafael Maria of Mataró met a violent end when he was murdered by Marxists in Vallvidrera, Barcelona, after declaring himself to be a friar. His courageous stance and unwavering dedication to his faith made him a martyr for the Catholic Church.
In recognition of his martyrdom and the sincerity of his faith, Pope Francis declared his veneration on June 5, 2015, issuing a decree of martyrdom. This paved the way for his beatification, which took place on November 21, 2015, at the cathedral of Santa Creu i Santa EulÖlia in Barcelona, Spain. The ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.
Blessed Francesc De Paula Soteras Culla's feast day is observed on August 1st, commemorating the day of his death. As a blessed of the Catholic Church, he serves as an inspiration to many faithful individuals, reminding them of the importance of unwavering commitment to their faith, even in the face of adversity and persecution.
His life and martyrdom stand as a testament to the power of faith and the courage of those who are willing to lay down their lives for their beliefs. Blessed Francesc De Paula Soteras Culla continues to be revered within the Catholic community for his selflessness and devotion to God, leaving a lasting impact on all who encounter his story.
