Feast Day: September 29
Birth: April 19, 1914
Death: September 29, 1936
Blessed Francesc De Paula Castelló Aleu was born on April 19, 1914, in Alicante, Spain. He was the youngest of three children, and unfortunately, his father passed away while Francesc was just an infant.
Francesc received his education from the Marists in Lleida, Catalonia, and later attended the Chemical Institute in Barcelona, where he was taught by the Jesuits. During his college years in Oviedo, he became politically active and continued working closely with the Jesuit community. He was also a member of the Federation of Young Christians of Catalonia and actively participated in Catholic Action.
After completing his studies and gaining expertise in chemistry, Francesc worked as a chemist in his hometown of Lleida. Despite his professional pursuits, he remained deeply committed to his Catholic faith and continued his involvement in various Catholic organizations.
Francesc was engaged to Maria Pelegri, and they looked forward to building a life together. However, their plans took an unexpected turn when he was drafted into the army just before the Spanish Civil War erupted. This marked a tumultuous period in Spain's history, characterized by political tensions and increasing anti-Catholic sentiments.
Regrettably, the situation deteriorated further for Francesc as he was imprisoned on the night of July 21-22, 1936, by anti-Catholic militiamen. Subsequently, he was brought before a "people's court," where he faced intense pressure to renounce his faith. However, despite the threats and coercion, Francesc resolutely refused to renounce his Catholic beliefs.
Ultimately, Francesc's steadfast commitment to his faith led to his martyrdom. He was put to death on September 29, 1936, in his hometown of Lleida, Spain. His courageous and unwavering stance in the face of persecution earned him the title of martyr.
Recognizing his sacrificial witness, Pope John Paul II declared Francesc Castelló Aleu blessed on March 11, 2001. This beatification ceremony, which took place shortly after his martyrdom was acknowledged by the Pope on December 18, 2000, honors Francesc's life and martyrdom as an example of heroic virtue and devotion to the Catholic faith.
Blessed Francesc De Paula Castelló Aleu is venerated and celebrated on his feast day, September 29th. His life serves as an inspiration to all believers, reminding us of the sacrifices made by those who steadfastly hold on to their faith even in the face of great adversity.
