Blessed Fran Mirakaj, also known as Prenda Alija Kamerin, was a devout Catholic and a lifelong layman of the diocese of Sapôs, Albania. Born on 13 August 1916 in Kodôr Qurk, Iballô of Pukôs, Shkodôr, Albania, Fran grew up in a family deeply rooted in their Catholic faith.
In October 1934, Fran married the love of his life, Prenda Alija Kamerin. They began their life together, and Fran's roles as a farmer, salesman, and livestock merchant provided for their family. Despite the challenges of life, Fran remained faithful to his beliefs and played an active role in the local Catholic community.
During the period when Albania was under communist rule, Fran's unwavering commitment to his faith caught the attention of the authorities. His steadfast devotion made him a target, and on 24 December 1945, he was arrested by Communist authorities in Iballô. Fran was then imprisoned in Shkodôr, enduring the hardships and persecution that awaited him.
On 22 February 1946, Fran faced a show trial, where his allegiance to his Catholic faith was used against him. Despite knowing the consequences, Fran refused to renounce his beliefs, standing firm in his commitment to God. Tragically, he was sentenced to death at the end of the trial, sentenced for adhering to the faith that he held dear.
In the early hours of 4 March 1946, at 5 am, Fran Mirakaj was executed in Tiranô, Albania. His life was violently taken from him solely because of his religious devotion and refusal to forsake his Catholic beliefs.
Recognizing his heroic martyrdom, Pope Francis declared Fran Mirakaj as venerable on 26 April 2016. Later, on 5 November 2016, in a moving ceremony held at the Square of the Cathedral of Shôn Shtjefni in Shkodôr, Albania, Pope Francis beatified Fran Mirakaj. The beatification was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, symbolizing the official recognition of Fran's holiness and martyrdom.
Blessed Fran Mirakaj's courageous witness to his faith and his ultimate sacrifice have become an inspiration to many believers around the world.
