Biography

Blessed Fortunato Merino Vegas was an Augustinian priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 11 November 1892 in Iteroseco, Palencia, Spain.

From a young age, Fortunato felt a strong calling to the priesthood and joined the Augustinian Order as a way to dedicate his life to serving God and others. He entered the seminary and was ordained a priest, committing himself to a life of prayer, contemplation, and service.

During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution was rampant, and the Catholic Church became a target. As an outspoken defender of the faith, Father Fortunato openly opposed the ideologies and violence that were prevalent at the time. He fearlessly defended the rights of the Church and actively supported those who sought refuge and shelter from the chaos.

On 25 August 1936, in the city of Málaga, Spain, Father Fortunato was martyred for his unwavering faith and dedication to his calling. His courageous stance against the forces that sought to suppress the Catholic Church ultimately cost him his life.
