Biography

Blessed Fernando Español Berdie, also known as "Blessed Fernando," was a Roman Catholic priest from the diocese of Cuenca, Spain. He was born on October 11, 1875, in Anciles, Huesca, Spain. Throughout his life, Blessed Fernando devoted himself to serving the Church and spreading the message of the Gospel.

In his early years, Blessed Fernando displayed a deep sense of piety and a strong desire to dedicate himself to the priesthood. Following his calling, he pursued his studies in theology and was ordained as a priest in the diocese of Cuenca.

As a priest, Blessed Fernando tirelessly served the Catholic community in Cuenca, providing pastoral care and spiritual guidance to the faithful. He was known for his compassionate heart, unwavering faith, and selfless dedication to his parishioners.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Fernando's faith and commitment were put to the ultimate test. In the midst of religious persecution, he faced opposition and hostility due to his unwavering devotion to his faith. Despite the dangers, he bravely continued to minister to the faithful and celebrate Masses in secret.

On August 8, 1936, Blessed Fernando's life of faith came to a martyr's end. He was arrested for his religious beliefs and executed in Cuenca, Spain. His courageous witness to the Gospel and his unwavering commitment to Christ earned him the title of martyr.

Recognizing his sacrifice and martyrdom, Blessed Fernando was venerated by the Catholic Church on April 28, 2006, by a decree of Pope Benedict XVI. Later, on October 28, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, acknowledging his exemplary life of faith and his ultimate sacrifice for the Gospel.
