Blessed Felipe Llamas Barrero, also known as Domitilo of Ayoó, was born on 3 September 1907 in Ayoó de Vidriales, Zamora, Spain. He joined the Franciscan Capuchins on 2 August 1923 and took the religious name Domitilo of Ayoó. After a year of formation and discernment, he made his religious profession on 3 August 1924.
Deeply committed to his faith and the mission of preaching the Gospel, Father Domitilo was ordained a priest on 30 May 1931. He quickly gained a reputation as a passionate preacher, captivating his audiences with his eloquence and fervor.
However, tragedy struck during the early days of the Spanish Civil War when Father Domitilo was arrested on 3 August 1936. His only offense was being a priest and continuing to preach in the streets, even after the conflict had begun. Despite his unjust imprisonment, Father Domitilo remained steadfast in his faith and unwavering in his commitment to his calling.
Throughout his time in custody, Father Domitilo refused to remove his Capuchin habit, a symbol of his religious identity. He fearlessly ministered to his fellow prisoners, offering spiritual guidance and solace to those who desperately needed it in those tumultuous times. His words and actions spoke of forgiveness, even amidst such oppression and hostility.
On the night of 6 September 1936, Father Domitilo, along with 22 of his fellow prisoners, was taken to the Peón cemetery in Gijón, Asturias, Spain, where they were executed for their faith. In his final moments, Father Domitilo exemplified the core principles of his faith. He gave sacramental absolution to the other victims, emphasizing the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation in the face of violence and hatred.
Recognizing his remarkable witness and martyrdom, Pope Francis declared him venerable on 27 March 2013. Further honoring his sacrifice, Blessed Felipe Llamas Barrero was beatified on 13 October 2013 by Pope Francis. The beatification ceremony took place at the Complex Educatiu in Tarragona, Spain, and was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.
The life of Blessed Felipe Llamas Barrero continues to inspire and remind us of the courage and devotion displayed by those who suffer persecution for their faith. May his enduring legacy serve as a testament to the power of forgiveness, even in the darkest of times.
