Biography

Blessed Felipe Basauri Altube, also known as Felipe Altube, was born on 18 March 1881 in Bilbao, Vizcaya, Spain. He was a married layman and a dedicated member of the Association of the Miraculous Medal in the archdiocese of Madrid, Spain.

Felipe Altube lived in a time of intense political and social turmoil in Spain. He tragically suffered martyrdom during the Spanish Civil War due to his unwavering faith and commitment to his Catholic beliefs. On 23 October 1936, he was martyred in Madrid, Spain, giving his life for his faith and refusing to renounce his Catholicism.

Despite the painful circumstances of his death, Felipe was recognized for his extraordinary virtue and steadfast witness to the Christian faith. On 23 March 2017, Pope Francis declared Felipe Altube as venerable, acknowledging his martyrdom. Later, on 11 November 2017, Pope Francis beatified him, a significant recognition of his sanctity and the offering of his life for the sake of Christ. The beatification ceremony took place at the Palacio Vistalegre Arena in Carabanchel, Madrid, Spain, and was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato and Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra of Madrid, honoring and celebrating his beatification.
