Birth: November 16, 1919
Death: September 22, 1936
Blessed Federico Cobosanz, also known as Federico Cobos Gómez, was an aspirant to the Salesians of Don Bosco who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on November 16, 1919, in Rábano, a small town in Valladolid, Spain.
Federico grew up in a devout Catholic family and demonstrated a strong inclination towards the religious life from an early age. Inspired by the teachings and example of St. John Bosco, the founder of the Salesians, Federico felt a deep calling to serve God and others as a Salesian priest. He joined the Salesian Seminary in Madrid, where he received a formation centered on spiritual growth, pastoral work, and academic excellence.
Tragically, Federico's dreams and aspirations were cut short due to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936. The war unleashed a wave of violence and persecution against Catholics and religious communities in Spain. As a result, many seminaries and religious houses were forced to close, and those associated with religious institutions became targets for the opposing forces.
On September 22, 1936, while serving as an aspirant in the Salesian Congregation, Federico was captured by anti-Catholic forces near Puerto de Hierro, Madrid. Despite being aware of the dangers he faced, Federico remained steadfast in his faith and refused to renounce his religious convictions. He bravely gave witness to his love for Christ and his desire to imitate the selfless and sacrificial life of St. John Bosco.
Federico Cobosanz was subjected to harsh treatment and torture, but he never wavered in his commitment to Christ and his vocation. On the same day of his capture, September 22, 1936, Federico was cruelly executed for his faith. Although his earthly life was tragically cut short, his courageous witness and martyrdom continue to inspire countless individuals to this day.
Federico Cobosanz was officially recognized for his martyrdom by the Catholic Church. On June 26, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI issued a decree of martyrdom, acknowledging Federico's unwavering fidelity to his religious calling and his ultimate sacrifice in defense of his faith. This declaration paved the way for Federico's beatification, which took place on October 28, 2007, also presided over by Pope Benedict XVI.
Today, Blessed Federico Cobosanz is venerated as a martyr and a model of steadfast faithfulness to Christ and the Church. His feast day is commemorated on September 22, the anniversary of his martyrdom. As an aspirant to the Salesians, Federico epitomizes the Salesian spirit of devotion, selflessness, and dedication to the welfare and education of young people. May his example inspire all believers to live their faith courageously and generously.
