Blessed Félix Pérez Portela, also known as Félix Pérez Portela, was born on 21 February 1895 in Adanero, Ávila, Spain, to Miguel Pérez and Portela Saturnina. His early life was marked by a strong sense of faith and devotion, which eventually led him to enter the seminary in Madrid, Spain, in 1907.
In October 1913, Félix Pérez Portela embarked on a new chapter of his spiritual journey when he began studying at the Spanish School of San Jose in Rome, Italy. There, he pursued a course in theology and canon law at the prestigious Gregorian University, deepening his understanding of the Catholic faith and the principles of church law.
On 10 March 1918, Félix Pérez Portela was ordained as a priest, committing himself to a life of service to God and His people. After his ordination, he began his ministry as a parish priest in Madrid, where he carried out his pastoral duties with great love and dedication.
In June 1920, Félix Pérez Portela took on the role of personal secretary to Venerable Manuel Basulto Jiménez, the bishop of Jaén, Spain. This position allowed him to work closely with a highly respected figure in the Church, enabling him to deepen his knowledge and strengthen his faith.
During his time in Jaén, Félix Pérez Portela served the diocese in various capacities. He became the Vicar General of the diocese in 1935, demonstrating his administrative skills and his commitment to the spiritual well-being of the faithful. Additionally, he was appointed Dean of the cathedral of Jaén, where he ensured the proper functioning of the diocese's central church.
Tragically, Félix Pérez Portela's life was cut short due to the Spanish Civil War. On 12 August 1936, he was martyrized while being transported as a prisoner on a train in Vallecas, Madrid. His unwavering faith and unwavering dedication to his vocation led to his untimely death at the age of 41.
After his martyrdom, Félix Pérez Portela's body was laid to rest in the crypt of the Cathedral of Jaén, Spain, a fitting final resting place for a faithful servant of God. His memory and sacrifice have been honored and venerated by the Catholic Church, with Pope Francis declaring his martyrdom on 27 March 2013.
Recognizing Félix Pérez Portela's profound dedication to his faith and the ultimate sacrifice he made for it, Pope Francis beatified him on 27 October 2013. The beatification recognition ceremony took place in Tarragona, Spain, commemorating his life, witness, and the enduring legacy of his martyrdom.
