Biography

Blessed Félix Barrio Y Barrio was born in November 1883 in Villafranca Montes de Oca, Burgos, Spain. He was a devoted Catholic and member of the Claretians, a religious order founded by St. Anthony Mary Claret.

Félix Barrio Y Barrio professed his religious vows on 19 March 1899, dedicating his life to serving God and spreading the message of Christ. He lived during a tumultuous time in Spanish history, when the country was gripped by the Spanish Civil War.

Sadly, Félix Barrio Y Barrio, along with many other faithful Catholics, became a victim of the religious persecution that occurred during this period. He was martyred for his unwavering faith and dedication to his religious calling on 14 October 1936 in Torrelavega, Santander, Spain.

On 21 December 2016, Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrdom, officially recognizing Félix Barrio Y Barrio's sacrifice and adding his name to the list of Catholic martyrs. This recognition by the pope was a testament to the courage and faith of Félix Barrio Y Barrio and the other 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs who suffered a similar fate during the same period.

Blessed Félix Barrio Y Barrio is remembered and celebrated on two feast days: 14 October, the day of his martyrdom, and 1 February, in honor of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs. His beatification took place on 21 October 2017 in the Basilica of Sagrada Familia, Barcelona, Spain. The ceremony was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato, who represented the Holy See.

As a Claretian martyr, Félix Barrio Y Barrio stands as a symbol of unwavering faith, dedication, and sacrifice. His life serves as an inspiration to all those who seek to live out their Catholic faith with courage and conviction.
