Biography

Blessed Ezequiél Prieto Otero, also known as Eusebio of Saludes or Eusebius, was born on 19 February 1885 in Saludes, León, Spain. Feeling called to the religious life, Ezequiél joined the Franciscan Capuchins on 2 February 1907, taking the name Eusebius. A year later, on 2 February 1908, he made his profession as a lay brother.

In 1919, Brother Eusebius was sent to a Franciscan house in Cuba, where he dedicated himself to serving as a carpenter and catechist. He selflessly worked to spread the teachings of the Catholic faith and helped build a strong Christian community in Cuba. However, due to health problems, he was forced to return to Spain in 1927.

On 21 July 1936, in the early days of the Spanish Civil War, Brother Eusebius found himself caught in the religious persecution that ensued. Along with four other Franciscans, he was imprisoned in the Jesuit church in Jove, Spain, for the offense of actively practicing Christianity. Despite being given several weeks of confinement and opportunities to renounce his faith, Brother Eusebius adamantly refused to do so.

On 14 August 1936, after enduring persecution and refusing to renounce his beliefs, Brother Eusebius was martyred for his faith. His sacrifice and unwavering devotion to God serve as an inspiration to all.

Blessed Ezequiél Prieto Otero's feast day is celebrated on 14 August annually. The veneration of his martyrdom was recognized by Pope Francis on 27 March 2013, with the declaration of his martyrdom. He was then beatified by Pope Francis on 13 October 2013 at the Complex Educatiu in Tarragona, Spain. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.

Brother Eusebius, as he is affectionately called, is remembered for his commitment to serving others, his deep faith in God, and his willingness to suffer and die for his beliefs. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire and encourage all those who strive to live according to their Christian convictions.
