Feast Day: August 17
Birth: September 5, 1880
Death: August 17, 1936
Blessed Eugenio Sanzorozco Mortera, also known as José María of Manila, was born on 5 September 1880 in Manila, Philippines. He was the son of Eugenio del Saz-Orozco de la Oz, the last Spanish mayor of Manila, and Felisa Mortera y Camacho.
Eugenio received his education at Ateneo de Manila University, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, and the University of Santo Tomas. Despite his parent's wishes, Eugenio felt a strong call to religious life. He joined the Franciscan Capuchins in Lecaroz, Navarra, Spain, on 4 October 1905, taking the name José María. He made his solemn profession on 18 October 1908 and was ordained as a priest on 30 November 1910.
Father José María had a deep desire to return to the Philippines to serve the people there, but circumstances prevented him from doing so. Instead, he dedicated himself to ministering to the poor and marginalized in various parts of Spain. He tirelessly worked to alleviate their suffering, providing spiritual guidance, and assisting those in need.
Tragically, Blessed Eugenio Sanzorozco Mortera's life was cut short by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. He was martyred on 17 August 1936, while in the Montaña barracks in Madrid, Spain.
Blessed Eugenio Sanzorozco Mortera was recognized for his martyrdom and was venerated on 27 March 2013 by Pope Francis, who issued a decree of martyrdom. Subsequently, on 13 October 2013, Pope Francis himself beatified him. The beatification recognition ceremony took place at Tarragona, Spain, officiated by Cardinal Angelo Amato.
As a blessed and martyr, Blessed Eugenio Sanzorozco Mortera's feast days are celebrated on 17 August and 6 November, particularly as one of the Martyred Capuchin Franciscans. His life continues to serve as an inspiring example of selfless dedication and sacrifice for the faith.
