Death: July 22, 1936
Blessed Eugenio Artola Sorolla, also known as Victorico María, was a devout Monk and a member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools. He was born on 12 April 1894 in Cinctorres, Castellón, Spain. From a young age, Eugenio demonstrated a deep love for God and a strong desire to live a life of service. This calling led him to join the Marist Brothers, a Catholic religious congregation dedicated to providing education and spiritual guidance to young people.
As a Marist Brother, Eugenio devoted himself to the education and formation of students, instilling in them the values of faith, knowledge, and virtue. He was known for his kindness, patience, and dedication to his students, who greatly admired him.
However, during the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, Eugenio's commitment to his faith and vocation placed him in great danger. The war, characterized by political and ideological conflicts, particularly targeted religious figures and institutions. Despite the perilous circumstances, Eugenio refused to abandon his duty and remained steadfast in his commitment to God and his fellow brothers.
Tragically, on 22 July 1936, Eugenio Artola Sorolla was martyred for his faith in Redueña, Madrid, Spain. He was killed, along with many other religious individuals, in the midst of the violent persecution against Catholic clergy during the civil war.
Recognizing the heroic virtue and sacrificial witness of Eugenio Artola Sorolla, the Catholic Church issued a decree of martyrology on 3 June 2013, declaring him venerable. On 13 October 2013, Pope Francis beatified him, acknowledging his exceptional sanctity and bestowing upon him the title of "Blessed."
Blessed Eugenio Artola Sorolla is remembered not only for his exemplary commitment to the Marist Brothers' mission of education but also for his unwavering fidelity to his faith and fortitude during a time of intense persecution. His life serves as an inspiration to all, urging us to remain steadfast in our own spiritual journey, no matter the challenges we face.
