Death: July 2, 1904
Blessed Eugénie Joubert, also known as Eugénie Anna Joubert, was born on 11 February 1876 in Yssingeaux, Haute-Loire, France. She was the fourth of eight children of Pietro Joubert and Antonia Celle, who were wine-makers by profession. Eugénie was baptized on the day she was born, symbolizing her early connection to the Catholic faith.
Eugénie received her education at the Ursuline boarding school in Ministrel, France, from 1881 to 1887. She then continued her studies at the College of Saint Mary in Le Puy, France, which was run by the Sisters of Notre Dame, from 1889 to 1892. It was during this time that she made her First Communion on 29 May 1887, strengthening her bond with Christ.
With a deep love for her faith, Eugénie dedicated herself to teaching catechism to the local children. Her passion and devotion soon led her to pursue a religious vocation. At the age of 19, on 6 October 1895, Eugénie joined the Sisters of the Holy Family of the Sacred Heart in Aubervilliers, France. She made her profession as a religious sister on 8 December 1897, taking her final vows in her commitment to serve God and others.
Following her religious formation, Sister Eugénie was assigned to be a catechist in Aubervilliers, where she worked tirelessly with impoverished children to prepare them for their First Communion. Her boundless care and love for these children served as a testament to her devotion to the Catholic faith and her unwavering dedication to the teachings of Christ.
Tragically, in 1902, Sister Eugénie contracted tuberculosis. Despite her declining health, she continued to serve God and the community. In May 1904, she was assigned to Rome, Italy, but due to the progression of her illness, she was later moved to Belgium. Sadly, Sister Eugénie passed away on 2 July 1904 in Liège, Belgium, due to complications from tuberculosis.
Throughout her life, Blessed Eugénie Joubert was known for her profound devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her love for Mary, the mother of Jesus, inspired and guided her in her mission to care for the children she taught and the community she served.
Blessed Eugénie Joubert's life of selflessness and compassion for others did not go unnoticed. On 9 June 1983, Pope John Paul II recognized her heroic virtues and declared her venerable. Later, on 20 November 1994, Pope John Paul II beatified her, acknowledging her exemplary life of holiness and the impact she had on the Catholic Church.
Today, Blessed Eugénie Joubert is remembered and honored on her feast day, which is celebrated on 2 July. She is interred in the chapel of the Sisters of the Holy Family of the Sacred Heart in Dinant, Belgium. Her life serves as an inspiration to all, reminding us of the importance of faith, love, and care for those in need.
