Biography

Blessed Eudald Rodas Saurina, also known as Brother Oleguer Àngel, was a devout Catholic and member of the Salesians religious congregation. Born on 1 August 1912 in Santa Coloma de Farners, Girona, Spain, he grew up with a strong faith and a desire to serve God.

Brother Eudald dedicated his life to education and became a dedicated teacher within the Salesian community. He had a deep passion for guiding and nurturing young minds, instilling in them not only knowledge but also the values of faith and morality.

However, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Brother Eudald's unwavering commitment to his faith led to his martyrdom. On 18 August 1936, in Sant Hipúlit de VoltregÖ, Barcelona, Brother Eudald was tragically killed for his refusal to renounce his Catholic beliefs. His unwavering faith and commitment to Christ even in the face of persecution and death remain a testament to his dedication as a Christian.

As a result of his martyrdom, Brother Eudald Rodas Saurina was recognized for his holiness and sacrifice. His cause for beatification was introduced, and on 22 June 2004, Pope John Paul II proclaimed him venerable, acknowledging his martyrdom. Later, on 28 October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified Brother Eudald in a solemn ceremony, officially declaring him Blessed.

Blessed Eudald Rodas Saurina's feast day is celebrated on 18 August each year, commemorating the day of his martyrdom. His life and sacrifice continue to inspire and serve as a reminder of the courage and steadfastness of those who remained devoted to their Catholic faith, even in the most challenging of circumstances.
